We are taking a break in the travel posts for a few days, so I thought we would talk about decorating a bit on this Monday. But first, we’ve got to talk about the weather. I can’t decide if Mother Nature has hit menopause and is having a mid-life crisis…or if she is just a fickle old soul.
Last week she was having hot flashes with temperatures in the 80’s in much of our country. She was happily wearing sunny skies, bright flowers, green grass, and her trees were all decked out in buds and tiny chartreuse leaves.
This week…she’s sooo not the same.
The hot flashes are gone.
She’s wearing gray skies, and in many places she is downright cold!
She has covered up all those pretty flowers and leaf buds with a wrap of white snow.
So has she hit that glorious thing we call middle age, or is she just a… fickle female…not able to make up her mind?
Give her time.
She’ll figure it out.
That’s always been my hope when it comes to problems. So let’s hope Mother Nature gets her act together and figures out how she wants to dress for March. Sometimes deciding on your “look” can be a hard thing to do, right?
Meanwhile, this fickle female has been changing things around here. My fickleness has been a problem since as far back as I can remember. Blue bedroom, yellow bedroom, wallpapered bedroom. Blue dorm room, blue and green dorm room, red and white dorm room. Blue and brown apartment, red and green living room, green and navy living room…and…on and on.
Hello. My name is Kelly and I suffer from seasonal-hormonal-I-need-a-whole-new-look disease.
You know this disease. The one where you want to throw everything out of your closet and house and start all over fresh with an entirely different look and style? (Please tell me I am not alone in this.)
In fact I have thought that after every 20 years of marriage everyone should get to start over and do another wedding registry to get house gifts all over again (only this time it would be your “anniversary registry.”)
Wouldn’t that be great? 🙂
But seriously, over the years you know we have found a way to deal with the seasonal desires for change. Yes, good ol’ neutral walls. Instead of repainting or re-wallpapering rooms, (like I used to do all the time when I was in my thirties) we just change out the linens…add a few accessories and flowers in a different color, and voila…a whole new look! (Sung to the tune of Aladdin’s A Whole New World….you’re welcome for the song now in your head.)
So with that in mind, the quick fix for seasonal-hormonal-I-need-a-whole-new-look in the master bedroom was new yellow linens ($39 quilt and $15 shams from Steinmart) to replace all the red. I had borrowed the yellow ones from the boys’ bedroom last fall, but they need them back in there now…so I bought my own. 🙂
Plus I threw in some floral arrangements with yellow flowers for small touches of spring in both the bedroom and the bathroom.
And the red beadboard in the back of the bathroom’s antique cabinet was removed (and stored away for another time) to reveal the painted yellow one. (Sorry this yellow is not reading right in the photo. It is very hard to photograph our bathroom. 🙁 )
Doing all of that was much easier (and less expensive) than repainting or wallpapering the room and purchasing all new whatever for the season. (And I am hoping if those daffodils are planted outside they might come back and bloom again next year. 🙂 )
But I will be honest. After following this decorating recipe for a number of years with pops of red, green, yellow, and a little blue, I still find myself drawn to other “looks.” When I daily see all white rooms with no other color, kitchens that are all white with subway tile in practically every single one, (and they all begin to look just like each other) shiplap in every room on Pinterest, Instagram, and in magazines, I begin to ask myself…should I be changing our “look” here too?
But then I also ask myself, Can I see my husband living in those all white rooms? Can I see our family activities in houses with those rooms with no color? Do I really want the rooms in my house to look just like the rooms in everyone else’s? The answer always comes back to me….No.
We are the ones who live here, and since our home is the setting for all the activities of our life, I am reminded that what we have, works for us right now. So this fickle female is grateful and happy with the look of our home…the home that we have made here. 🙂
(But I am going to continue thinking about a dream lake house with a different look. Okay? 😉 )
I hope this bit of spring decorating has brightened your day today. If you are in the blizzard zone of this week’s crazy March snowstorm, I hope you are snug inside your home until fickle Mother Nature figures out it is time for her to bring on springtime for good.
Thank you sooo much for visiting here today. I appreciate you!
Until next time…
