Okay friends, this is not exactly a…um….Talk of the House type party. And no, it isn’t as pretty or “photogenic” as other parties we’ve hosted around here, but it was a very fun one. So just bear with me as I share this one with you. And I will start by asking you if you have seen the Guardians of the Galaxy movies? Our entire family just LOVES them. 🙂

So when it came time to come up with ideas for our daughter’s birthday last year, I knew a Guardians of the Galaxy party would be fun and one we would all enjoy – especially our daughter. (And of course I kept it a secret until the last minute. 🙂 ) I started with a color scheme of bright blue, white, and black.
If you aren’t familiar with them, the movies are space adventures set in the future with a big dose of humor, and we love all the retro music that plays throughout them. Music is an important part of any party to me. It really sets the mood, so of course I bought the sound tracks as soon as I decided on the party theme. 🙂

A special cassette tape plays an important role in the movie for the lead character. I pulled out a number of old ones here and piled them in a jar on the mantel for a bit of party decor in the family room.
As I was researching items to use for the party, I came across a “mix tape” box printable here that I knew would be perfect for the party favors. I printed them out on cardstock, filled them with Starburst candies (get the space reference there? 🙂 ) and put them in a jar in the foyer as I often do for our party favors.
I picked up a few Guardians of the Galaxy toys that I found at Target and used them as part of the decor.
One of the most beloved characters in the movies is a talking tree named Groot. His constant line throughout the movies is “I am Groot.” It was a must-do to find a way to work that into the party decorations. 🙂
One other jar was filled with old VHS tapes as another retro touch for the party.
And luckily, I was able to find a Guardians of the Galaxy Monopoly game to use on the game table in the family room.
To reference the movie’s Infinity stones (an important part of the plot) I used rock candy from Cracker Barrel.
Here’s another look at the party table from the photo at the top of the post. Those blue plastic dishes were very inexpensive at Target last summer, and the black and white checked napkins were old ones that I purchased from…Sur la Table….I think. And the black handled flatware (from Walmart) was what I used for our daughter’s graduation party (see here – a MUCH prettier party than this one I think. 🙂 )
The Dancing Groot toy was a hilarious addition to the table. 🙂

I located a few Guardians of the Galaxy trading cards and buttons at Books-a-Million and toy figures at Toys R Us, and I scattered them around the table. Once again we had hamburgers for the party along with baked beans (which were missing from the black holder in the photo above.) The birthday cake was a caramel cake from a local bakery (topped with a tiny baby Groot. 🙂 ) And birthday girl had to have her Cheerwine!
She absolutely loved the party and has repeatedly said it was her all-time favorite party we have done. (I think it was the music that really made the celebration!)
And now we are finally caught up on all of last year’s birthday parties. My husband’s birthday is next week, so I need to get to work on plans for that!
Until next time…
