Fall Entertaining – A Dinner for Halloween and a Giveaway Treat for You!

Happy Halloween! I hope you are all having a fun day here on the last day of October- and that you were spared any damage from Hurricane Sandy.  I have only treats for you today…no tricks. 🙂 First, here is a dinner I’d like to share with you.  The last Saturday in October was a good night for soup and salad. You saw the dining room ready for Halloween earlier this week, and here it is at night.

This is the menu for the meal.

The potato soup recipe is from a good friend of mine. (Thanks, Robin!)  I was hoping for a few leftovers, but it was so well liked, there was only one small bowl left after the meal!

Just in case you would like the recipe for the delicious soup…

Here it is simmering in the pot.

If you like spinach salad, you will like this easy recipe.

There are many delicious spinach salad dressing recipes around, but I took the easy route and purchased spinach salad dressing (Marzetti’s brand.)  My mom loved the dressing even if it did come from a jar!

You have probably made the little ham and Swiss sliders many times before, but just in case there is someone out there that needs the recipe, here it is.

And this was dessert…a pumpkin pecan cake with caramel sauce and whipped cream.

Several years ago, I was in Williams Sonoma, and a cooking demonstration was taking place.  It was for this cake, and the smell was heavenly!  It uses their spiced pecan pumpkin quick bread mix and their Muirhead pecan pumpkin butter.

As I was making the cake, a brilliant idea came to me.   You all deserve another giveaway… another treat for today since you are all just the sweetest readers.

I was going to give away one jar of the Muirhead pecan pumpkin butter and one bag of the Williams Sonoma spiced pecan pumpkin quick bread mix so that you could make the cake for Thanksgiving, but after checking at the WS site, they are sold out of the bread mix on line.  Darn it.  But have no fear!  They do have their pumpkin cupcake mix still, and they would be a hit with the kids if you frost them with cream cheese frosting.  Yum!  So 2 cans of the pumpkin cupcake mix will be headed to one lucky winner.

All you have to do is leave a comment for any post I publish between now and Saturday, November 10, 2012 (new posts – not old ones.)  You can leave a comment on every one from today until then if you would like to enter more than once.  Since I am so low tech, I will simply print out all the comments on Saturday night (11/10) and pull one name out of them.  The winner will be announced on Sunday 11/11, and I will get your gifts in the mail shortly after that so that they will arrive before Thanksgiving.  Hope you will enjoy this sweet treat.

I’ll leave you with a question to get you talking…

If you were going trick-or-treating tonight, what would be your favorite candy to get for Halloween?

(daughter’s dorm room door for Halloween.  We both adore the Broadway show, Wicked!)

hoping to hear from you,

****Giveaway has closed.  Winner announced on 11/12/12

The first post of yours that I received was the one about Jan Karon’s house, one of my favorite authors. I have loved looking at houses since I was a child and now I am a Grama. I always look forward to your posts.

What a beautiful table and delicious meal. Can’t wait to try the potato soup recipe. Where did you get your white dinnerware and what is the name of the pattern?

Jennifer Dudley from Chesapeake, VA - November 4, 2012 - 4:42 pm

Kelly, in the winter I make potato soup often…it’s good and my kids two out of the three kiddos LIKE it, and my military husband eats most anything. Let me just tell you I made your potato soup 2 nights ago… kids raved and raved and RAVED about how good it was. My husband loved it too. Thankyou for sharing a great, tummy warming recipe. It was easy, and I had such sweet satisfaction that my kids thought I was a total rockstar for making such a good potato soup…..we had a small bit left over, and the 13 an 15 year old ate it for breakfast the next morning. Ha! I would call that recipe a definite keeper!

Oh what a wonderful Halloween table – and such comfort food. Mmmmmm

I LOVE the door decoration that your talented daughter did (obviously her mother’s daughter!).

Favourite Halloween candy? No question – caramels! Must be eaten with a crispy apple – one bite apple, one caramel, another bite apple, another caramel… forget all the melting and dipping.

Love your posting… Happy Halloween!

Susie - October 31, 2012 - 9:37 am

Garden, Home and Party - October 31, 2012 - 9:05 am

That soup is on the menu board for this coming weekend. It sounds pretty easy and delicious. Thanks for sharing.

Do I have to pick just one? Okay, I think my favorite Halloween candy would be Milky Way, dark chocolate, the little mini-bite sized pieces. I always feel like I can eat more of those and it doesn’t count as far as calories. 🙂

Lori - October 31, 2012 - 8:58 am

I love your site! Excited to have the soup recipe….I have a similar one but the recipe calls for making it in the crock pot. Glad I can make it faster. Also, love the recipe for sliders that don’t have to be frozen. (I am challenged in the kitchen!) I also love your daughter’s wicked door. I would want Snickers candy bars or chocolate covered raisins if I were trick or treating!

Christina @ Floridays Mom - October 31, 2012 - 3:42 am

Great menu! I love your whole spread and that potato soup recipe looks amazing, I’ll be sure to try (I thought it was the “give away”) 🙂

What a wonderful autumn menu. I’m going to give your potato soup recipe a try here at home. We love potato soups! The cake looks sinfully divine too!

Halloween candy…anything chocolate with nuts would be the first gone from my trick or treat bag. A love affair I haven’t gotten over from childhood 😉

Happy Halloween!
