A Sneak Peek at the Progress in My Workroom

desktopWell we are still in full Christmas gear here getting ready for next week’s photoshoot, and we have been trying to finish up my workroom.  I really didn’t want to show you the room until it was finished (which it is not) but I thought you might like to see a few “sneak peeks” of some of the progress that has been made.

desk in workroom

I told you we were painting the desks, and you can see from the photos that they are a khaki color like the upper beadboard walls, and my husband backed the desk unit with beadboard to further tie in with the room.

deskI have gotten the upper cabinets organized with boxes holding my collection of ribbon.  (Yes, I am a hoarder of ribbon! 🙂 )

desk organization

And from the peek in the closet you can see I am also a hoarder of fabric and drapes

(and checks of every color.)

closet

The cabinet is not quite finished.  Drawers are painted, and doors are waiting on hinges. (They are to be here via FedEx tomorrow.)  The countertop is almost finished for it, but I have thrown an electrical problem with an outlet placement to my husband, so he is currently pondering that.

cabinetI was able to go ahead and move all my storage bins in there while he worked on the drawers and doors for it.

cabinet storage and organization

I had ordered 2 chairs for the desks from Joss and Main about a month ago, and they were supposed to be delivered tomorrow.  Unfortunately, they have run into a problem and won’t be able to get them to me until early February.  When the chairs arrive, I will do a full post on the room with a list of sources for you.

And that is all the snooping around in the room we are going to do for now. 🙂

I also wanted to pop in to talk about a few things….

First, thank you for all the nice new year’s wishes that so many of you sent me.  I appreciate every one! Secondly, I apologize that I have not been answering email and responding to comments for the last month. Between the upcoming photoshoot (and video tour filming) and all the illness that has run rampant here, getting anything done  has been quite challenging.  My father in law is still in the hospital (almost a month now). He has become quite tired of it and is dearly wanting to go home.  Hopefully they will work out something for him very soon. I should probably also let you know that my respiratory illnesses managed to do some bad things to my heart so I am going on a medicine for it, and I have to give up all caffeine products. Thank goodness for decaf coffee!  Anyone know of a decaf chocolate????? It is a sad day when I have to give up my beloved chocolate. 🙁

office suppliesI just wanted to say thank you for hanging in there with me and being patient when it takes me forever to answer your questions whether they are in a comment or an email.  I am planning on catching up with everything blog related during the MLK holiday weekend.  I hope to get a weekend post out this weekend if possible, but a huge load of greenery will be delivered here Friday, and hanging all of it is going to take awhile.  Please keep your fingers crossed we get everything finished by the time of the shoot.  And I would appreciate it if you would keep my father in law in your thoughts and prayers as well please. Thank you bunches. 🙂

Until next time…

I’m so sorry to hear about your father-in-law and your illness. Hope everything works out for the best!! 🙂 Yeah, giving up chocolate would be pretty hard. 😉
——————————————————————–
I think my father in law may actually get to come home from the hospital this week. Giving up chocolate has so not been fun! Especially in this season of hot cocoa. 🙁

Cheryl - January 15, 2015 - 8:01 am

Happy New Year ! I love your collection of curtains. I’ve read you make all your curtains ,could you tell me where you get all your material. I’m so sorry to hear of your heart problems take care.
——————————————————————-
Thank you Cheryl. I make most of my curtains, and I have ordered some from Country Curtains and some from Ballard Designs. Most of the plaids came from a fabric store that has since gone out of business. (I miss them!) The large red check and the khaki check came from Forsyth Fabrics in Atlanta (in person and ordered online). And I have ordered some of the fabric from decorativefabricsdirect.com
Hope this helps!

Leslie Anne @ Fairhope Supply Co. - January 12, 2015 - 12:28 pm

I just saw this and love your room, and hate your news about your dear heart. I had a similar situation occur after a series of lung infections. Caffeine is definitely not your friend right now, but everything worked out fine for me, and I’m sure you’ll be heart-y in no time too!
———————————————————————
Leslie Anne, so maybe I will be able to have chocolate later on? 🙂 You have given me hope. LOL Thank you for the compliment on the workroom.

Kelly,
Love what you are doing with this space! I am soooo excited about the photo shoot for you
I am thinking like Katrina, use those sick days girl. I want you to be well and don’t worry about replying to every post.
Prayers for you and your father in law.

Believe me, I used more sick days than I wanted to during the month of December. Thank you so much for your prayers DiAnne.

Katrina - January 8, 2015 - 9:35 pm

The sneak preview of your new room looks great!
Fresh greenery coming your way…oh Kelly, waiting to see the BHG edition of your Christmas house is going to be as hard as waiting for a new Downton Abbey season to start!
Prayers for YOU and your father-in-law. Take care of yourself and use those sick days girl!
———————————————————————–
I used a bunch of sick days between Thanksgiving and Christmas…waaay too many. It is no fun being sick. Your comparison to waiting for DA gave me a giggle. 🙂 Thank you for your prayers.

Love what’s been done in the office so far. And, I am envious of your fabric collection! So sorry to hear that your father-in-law is still in the hospital, fingers are crossed that he gets home real soon. Good luck on the final decorating, it will all be wonderful. You take care of yourself and I will be on the lookout for some healthy chocolate choices for you.
———————————————————————
Thank you Paula. We all have fingers crossed that my father in law will be getting out of the hospital this week. Please please let me know if you find any decaf chocolate. I don’t know how I am going to make it through the normal chocolate overload of Valentines’ Day! 🙂
Kelly

Debra - January 8, 2015 - 3:44 pm

Look at all the organization going on already! How fun to have your own little room to enjoy. Checks and red galore, of course! Now, don’t forget a jar or two. I love the bead board enhancement on the desk. Your hubby is so handy! I was sad to read of your heart being a concern. By all means, take care of yourself. On the coffee front, I love Papanicholas coffee and have been drinking hazelnut cream. They make it in a decaf. Have you ever had it? You can order it online if you don’t have it in your local store. Maybe you would like it. Not eating chocolate will be hard for sure. I’ll be keeping you and your father in law in prayer and my daily thoughts. Best of luck with the fun BHG photo shoot!

If you wish to try some… http://www.papanicholas.com/
———————————————————————-
Oh yes, the whole purpose of that room is organization of all my STUFF. 🙂 I haven’t forgotten the jars…there are actually 2 Christmas ones in there right now. Thank you for the recommendation of the coffee. I have never heard of that one and will try to check it out soon. I wonder if Fresh Market might carry it. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers Debra.

I can’t believe you have that many curtains! Lucky girl! Sorry to hear about your heart complications…having to give up chocolate would be a cruel and unusual punishment for sure! I will keep your FIL in my thoughts…you too! The workroom is looking great from the little snippets. Good luck next week…I’m sure everything will work itself out! 😉
———————————————————————
Yes, THAT many curtains! I rarely get rid of them…and I hang on to fabric for a very long time.

Regina - January 8, 2015 - 12:42 pm

I love progress pictures! All too often it seems like fairies come into a space and make all the “pretty” happen overnight…no planning, no reworking, no electrical outlet issues, just fairies and their magic fairy dust. 🙂

I’d like to know more about the big, round, black pencil/pen/desk organizer on your desk. It’s awesome! Did you buy it recently? If so, from where?

Prayers and lots of good Karma to your dad, you, and your family. Happy, Healthy New Year!
———————————————————————–
Thank you for your sweet words and your prayers Regina. I believe I got the round organizer at Home Goods a number of years ago, but I know I have seen similar things there recently.

You are so sweet Kathy. Thank you ever so much!

Susan - January 8, 2015 - 10:33 am

Oh Kelly, it sounds like you need a vacation (a long one) to Tahiti! Take care. You don’t fool around with heart issues. It sounds like you may have had rheumatic fever, if your heart was affected. Your new room will be a great place to kick back, relax & enjoy your hobbies. Your husband is doing a wonderful job. He is a true craftsman!
———————————————————————
I will pass along your sweet words to my husband. He IS a true craftsman. I am lucky to have him!

Kelly,
Please take care of yourself and slow down a bit, okay?

I love everything you do and how you get it all done while working and living a full life is beyond me!

I am slowing down and taking a heart medicine (that also slows me down.) Thank you for your kind words here Kay.

Source the desk caddy for us pretty please.

Denise, I think it came from HomeGoods. The other black storage piece came from Pottery Barn (if I am remembering correctly.)

Rose L - January 8, 2015 - 9:39 am

Kelly, I’m so sorry to hear of you and your F-I-L having such serious medical issues. I will send prayers for healing for both of you. I deal with my own issues daily and if misery loves company I’ll share that I’ve had to give up all fatty meats, salt, all forms of sugar and sweeteners (except Stevia) and finally all grain products. Coming from a family where food is the spice of life, it’s a struggle! I can no longer eat away from home and am forced to make everything from scratch from catsup to vegetables. Not an easy task with only two feet of counter space, lol! I love what we can see so far of your work room. Love your answer to storage for your beautiful drapes and fabrics. I hoard thread and fabrics which I keep sorted by color in clear see through totes (I quilt). It makes for a lovely display beneath my long arm frame in my sewing room. Best wishes on your upcoming photo shoot. Please take some time to rest when it’s over!!
———————————————————————–
Rose, thank you for your prayers. My little caffiene problem is nothing compared to all your food issues. Goodness! How in the world do you do all of that?
Kelly

Sue - January 8, 2015 - 9:20 am

I am so sorry that your illnesses have caused problems for your heart. I hope they are of a temporary nature, and surely someone somewhere has a decaf chocolate!
Your workroom is just wonderful ~ and best of luck on your photo shoot.
——————————————————————–
I am still looking for that decaf chocolate. Glad you liked the workroom Sue!
Kelly

Jill - January 8, 2015 - 9:03 am

Missed you Kelly! Thanks for popping in to give us an update even in all your busyness. I’m looking forward to seeing your finished work room. Your linen closet alone, with all those different colored checks, made me swoon. 🙂 The magazines will be knocking on your door about this room next I bet.
I’m sorry you are having complications from being sick. I could live without the coffee, but no chocolate? That would be a hard one to handle! Take care of yourself! Hopefully you will be able to relax and take a deep breath soon.
————————————————————————
Glad you liked the room Jill. Yes, chocolate is a hard one for me to give up…and I thought giving up shrimp for a shellfish allergy was difficult. Ha.
Hoping to find some down time very soon.
Kelly

Arlene@Nanaland - January 8, 2015 - 8:28 am

Kelly we feel your pain regarding caffeine. My husband has runs of premature Atrial contractions if he drinks caffeine. Not sure why it happened but he had been over loading on caffeinne for years and his heart got tired of it. We do decaf coffee and tea. As for Chocolate, he has some every now and then without any problems. I can have caffeinne but I have chosen to do without here at home. Now when I drop the grands off at school, I often stop by McDs for the REAL stuff. Hoping you are on the road to complete recovery and following drs orders!! Cannot wait to see your house in a magazine one day!
——————————————————————-
I am right there with your husband and the heart problems. Why do the good tasting things have to be bad for you? I would gladly give up green beans or corn! LOL
Kelly

Susan - January 8, 2015 - 8:05 am

I’m so sorry to learn of your health complications. Please take care of yourself. I can’t believe all that you’re trying to do while ill and weak. We all anticipate and appreciate your wonderful posts, but the most important thing for you to do is rest and get fully well again.
———————————————————————
I rested and am much better now Barbara. Thank you for the reassuring words in your comment. I will take care of myself. 🙂

Anne Boykin - January 8, 2015 - 6:15 am

Hi Kelly, Please take care of yourself, above all else. I know you’ve been busy with your photo shoot coming up so go easy on yourself. On a lighter note, your fabric and drape stash looks so yummy – makes me want to buy some checked fabric just to look at! Your home is going to photograph beautifully! You have a fabulous eye for decorating and a beautiful style all your own.
——————————————————————
Too funny about buying the checked fabric! Love it! Thank you for your kind compliments Anne. 🙂
Kelly

L J - January 8, 2015 - 3:02 am

You’ve made incredible progress on your workroom given all that has been going on with your household–and it’s really coming together nicely–all the “Kelly touches” are surfacing.
I’ve not heard of decaf chocolate and carob is a very poor substitute in my opinion. Since it is a matter of the heart then just do it! Giving up chocolate may not be forever. Pulling for you with the greenery and the BHG shoot/filming and for FIL too.
——————————————————————–
Thank you for all your encouraging words here Lorna! Yes, I am just doing it…no chocolate or caffinated coffee in over 2 weeks now.
Kelly

Judy - January 8, 2015 - 12:17 am

dear kelly, you take care of YOU and know that we’ll all be here when you are in a better place to respond, etc. you have a lot on your plate and combined with your recent health issues, you sure don’t want a set back.

praying for your FIL…I can’t imagine being in the hospital for a month! I’m sure he’s ready to go home where he’ll feel much better.

I about died when I saw your stash of curtains/fabrics…all those checks make my heart beat faster! I ordered the black and creme buffalo check curtains from Country Curtains for daughter’s den and they came in today….thankfully she has only one window in her den that needs to be “dressed” and the curtains were on sale so I broke down and ordered her a pair. We’ve got a lot to do at her house…finish up the baby’s room (hanging pictures, curtains, etc) and now getting this new pair of curtains hung in the den. Yes, I’ll take pictures when I’m done! (LOL)!

Hang in there sweet girl….and stay warm!
———————————————————————-
Hooray for progress in your daughter’s house! I know those curtains are looking wonderful there. Country Curtains has a new line of buffalo check drapes that are mighty tempting to me….don’t know where in the world I need them though. LOL

Barbara (WA) - January 8, 2015 - 12:04 am

Kelly, as I lay in bed with this horrible cold I will pray for you and your FIL. Hoping I don’t get pneumonia – and it affecting your heart – yikes. Take good care of yourself. I am loving what I’m seeing in your work room!
———————————————————————
I sure hope yours does not turn into pneumonia Barbara. It is no fun at all! Hope you get over your cold very soon. Thank you for the sweet words about my new workroom. I can’t wait to have it all finished.

Merri Jo - January 7, 2015 - 11:56 pm

You & your husband make a great team–what a lovely creative space you will have! I’m sorry that you have cardiac issues due to your illness. I am praying for healing for you & your f-i-l. I can only imagine how gorgeous your home will be as you place the greens, etc. My nurse instincts wonder if perhaps your body is telling you to slow down a bit. Teaching & blogging & the beauty you create in your home is enough tonkeep three people busy! You are such a dynamo which surely makes it especially difficult to slow down,,..but, please take care of yourself, dear Kelly.
——————————————————————
Thank you Merri Jo. I will pass along your compliment to my husband. 🙂 I am definitely slowing down with this…and with the new medicine the doctor has prescribed for me. I am listening to my body. (It is rather bossy!)
Kelly

Louvina - January 7, 2015 - 11:29 pm

Just a quick check in with prayers and best wishes for good health for you and your father in law. Don’t stress out about us– we all will be right here when you are less busy! Love the sneak peek in your work room. Looks just like what you would like. Wish we could be there to help with the photo shoot–and to still be in holiday mode!! I miss my tree already!! Get some rest and take care of your sweet heart!! Do what the Dr’s say, ok? Thinking of you daily with prayers —
———————————————————————–
I am doing what the doctor says…not a fun thing I must say. Thank you for your prayers Louvina.

Gracia @ Gracious Offering - January 7, 2015 - 11:28 pm

Kelly, loving the progress on your work room. I’m inspired by your ribbon organization as I think about the last Christmas stuff I still have to put away in our basement…a huge collection of ribbon and wrapping paper! Love those red boxes!
So sorry to hear about the challenges with health for your father in law…will pray for a complete recovery for him and for YOU! Giving up coffee would be tougher for me than chocolate I must admit, but giving up both is brutal….hoping this might be temporary?
I’m sure your photo shoot will be wonderful! Take good care of yourself in the mean time :). Warmly, Gracia
———————————————————————-
Thank you for your prayers Gracia. I don’t know if the heart problem is temporary or not. Hope you got all of your Christmas things put away. Glad you liked the boxes!
Kelly

Garden, Home and Party - January 7, 2015 - 11:17 pm

Kelly,
First of all, is the heart issue temporary? I’m holding the most positive of thoughts and prayers for your father-in-law. Hopefully he can come home to finish his recovery.

Good luck with the photo shoot. When you get the chance ( no rush) where did you find the red ribbon boxes? Container Store?

Continue good health progress.
xo,
Karen
———————————————————————
I don’t know if the heart problem is temporary or not. I have been told that you are not supposed to go off the heart medicine I am on, so we will see. That is a question for my next doctor’s visit. Thank you for the prayers for my father in law. They are needed and appreciated.
The red ribbon boxes did come from the Container Store. You have a good eye!
Kelly

Shirley@Housepitality Designs - January 7, 2015 - 11:15 pm

Oh Kelly, I am so sorry to hear about the complications of your respiratory illness…and coffee is one thing, but chocolate?….Actually, I have to be careful of the good quality, ultra dark chocolate as it does make my heart go a flutter…Hope you father in law gets better soon and can come home….I know your photo shoot will go beautifully as your home is so gorgeous…loved the progress of your workroom and I am swooning over your drapes and fabrics!!!
———————————————————————–
Thank you Shirley. I am steering clear of all chocolate right now. Not fun at all. 🙁 Glad you liked all the drapes and fabrics. I need to get sewing these drapes for the workroom!

Thank you Andrea. Yes, my health is more important than chocolate, but boy is this hard!

Sally - January 7, 2015 - 10:51 pm

AHAAAA!!! I wondered where you kept all of your pretty checked draperies! What a collection! Glad you are feeling better… but, take care of that heart! =) Praying for your father-in-law! ~Sally
———————————————————————-
Yes, they have been stored here and there and everywhere. So it is nice to finally have a place to keep everything fabric related. I am definitely taking care of the heart. Following doctor’s orders, my father’s orders, and my sister the nurse’s orders. Lots of bossy people around here!
